FIELD: data processing.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a region of encapsulating multimedia data with a time reference, for example, according to the basic format of standard body multimedia file (ISO BMFF), to improve streaming over the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), user-selectable regions of interest (ROI) in compressed video streams. Each time-referenced selection comprises a first layer and at least one second layer, and at least one of the layers comprises a plurality of sub-samples represented by one or more coding blocks. After receiving at least one subsample from a plurality of subsamples of one of the time-referenced samples, one track is created containing the at least one sub-sample received. Further, the created track is independently encapsulated in at least one media segment file, wherein said multimedia segment file contains display metadata to provide information about said at least one received sub-sample with respect to said one of the time-referenced samples and the level to which it belongs.

EFFECT: technical result consists in providing a scheme for organizing data and describing tracks suitable for spatial mosaic elements in scalable video streams, which ensures that whichever combination of tracks is selected by the client application, the result of parsing the ISO BMFF format always leads to a real elementary bitmap for the video decoder.
