FIELD: metallurgy.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to metallurgy and can be used in machine building, automotive industry and tractor construction in production of castings from cast iron. Iron of specified chemical composition is obtained in electric arc furnaces by stage-by-stage feeding of charging with carbon- and silicon-containing material in form of metallurgical silicon carbide with fraction 0–10 mm and content of SiC 82–95 % in amount of 0.57–1 %, carbon-containing material in form of crushed graphite in amount of 0.15–0.74 %, as well as steel component of charge with its further melting and subsequent correction of chemical composition of melt by additional introduction of crushed graphite, metallurgical silicon carbide and ferroalloys.

EFFECT: invention allows for step-by-step charging of crushed graphite, metal part of charge and metallurgical silicon carbide without mixing of said components, provides stable assimilation of carbon and silicon from carbon- and silicon-containing materials and their minimum loss.
