SUBSTANCE: system (5) comprises control module (7), processing module (9), communication interface (11) and storage module (13). Control module (7) is configured to start n different subsets of i pumps of multi-pump system (3) containing N pumps, during n different configuration cycles with speed ωj, where N≥2, 2≤n≤2N-1 and 1≤i≤N, wherein each configuration cycle j∈ {1,…,n} is associated with subset j∈ {1,…,n} and rate ωj, in which communication interface (11) is configured to receive signals indicating operating parameters from each subset j during associated configuration cycle j, in which processing module (9) is configured to determine an approximated characteristic Δp = f(q,ωj) of the pump based on the received signals for each subset j and assuming that i pumps of each subset j provide the same portion q/i of reference flow rate q, in which storage module (13) is configured to store an approximated characteristic Δp = f (q,ωj) of pump or parameters indicating it.
EFFECT: present invention provides system (5) for controlling a plurality of pumps, in particular a plurality of centrifugal submersible pumps at an adjustable rate at a pump station for a water supply network.
