FIELD: internal combustion engines.

SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in the internal combustion engines. Disclosed is engine control method. Using controller (12), during existence of the first condition, operation of engine (10) with separate disconnected cylinder, disconnection mechanism, cylinder and other cylinders, included into operation with the first duration of intake. First condition includes the first engine load. Using the controller, during the second condition existence, operation of the engine with the separate disconnected cylinder and other cylinders connected to operation with the second duration of intake. Second condition includes second engine load smaller than first engine load. Using the controller, during the third condition, operation of the engine with all cylinders included in operation. Third condition includes the third engine load larger than the first engine load. There are disclosed versions of engine with four cylinders.

EFFECT: technical result consists in reduction of fuel consumption due to operation of four-cylinder engine in three-cylinder mode in wide range of engine loads.
