SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in control systems of internal combustion engines. Disclosed are methods and systems for diagnosing faults of fuel injector supplying undesirable additional fuel to engine with disengaged cylinders. In one example, the method includes a response to an indication of the imbalance of the air-fuel mixture in the cylinder, disabling a subset of cylinders of the multi-cylinder engine, performing a power balance test to determine the output of each cylinder after the shutdown period and indicating that the fuel injector is faulty when the cylinder is disconnected, if the specified recoil is less than the threshold recoil.

EFFECT: invention allows detecting malfunction of fuel injector in cylinder.
