FIELD: technological processes.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of hardening a cutting tool by depositing multilayer coatings of a Ti-Al system and can be used in tool production. Cutting tool is arranged in working chamber to activate its surface before deposition of multilayer intermetallide coatings of Ti-Al system. Cleaning and heating of tool surface up to 200–300 °C is carried out using a plasma source of a filamentary cathode, followed by cleaning and heating tool electric arc evaporators to 450–500 °C. After coating with simultaneous spraying of two single-component cathodes of Al and Ti.
EFFECT: improving reliability of obtained coating and, consequently, reliability of cutting tool by providing homogeneity in chemical composition of coating along entire surface of cutting tool, forming multilayer structure of coating, as well as obtaining intermetallide phases TiAl3, Ti3Al in the Ti-Al coating.
