SUBSTANCE: invention refers to medicine, in particular to ophthalmology. Optic disc area and the peripapillary region are scanned in a circle with diameter of 3.40 mm by optical coherence tomography with measurement of the thickness of the middle layer of retinal nerve fibers and retinal ganglion cells by the ONH/GCC OU Report protocol and by the Angio Disc QuickVue protocol 4.5×4.5 mm. Density of the capillary bed is measured over the entire area of the optic disc and the density of the capillary bed in the peripapillary region. If the average thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer is less than 96 mcm, the average thickness of the retinal ganglion cell layer is less than 88 mcm, the density of the capillary bed throughout the optic disc area is less than 46 %, and in peripapillary region – less than 45 %, then diagnosing optic nerve atrophy in young patients.

EFFECT: method enables providing more reliable diagnosis of optic nerve atrophy in young patients, which enables prescribing a course of conservative treatment in a timely manner and stabilizing visual functions in the patients.
