FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to remote probing of an underlying surface and can be used in monitoring of sea surface hydrological processes and ecological pollution of shelf zones. Method of determining the level of contamination of the sea surface includes probing coastal water areas containing reference sections by means installed on the aerocopter, to obtain synchronous images by a video camera and registergrams of the spectrometer with their reference by coordinates of the GLONASS positioning system, isolating contours of contaminant areas on video shots by program calculation of image brightness function I(x, y), calculation of selected signal parameters within selected circuits: weighted average wavelength (λ) of reflected light flux; average wavelength of spatial spectrum (l) surface roughness; fractal dimension of video image (Ω), determination of contamination parameter P for analyzed and corresponding reference section as a product of selected parameters P=λ·/·Ω, determination of difference |ΔP| for analyzed and reference sections, estimation of contamination level in percentage through ratio ΔP to P reference section.

EFFECT: high reliability and accuracy of results of determining contaminants.
