FIELD: electrical engineering.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to electrical engineering and can be used in production of vanadium electrolytes for vanadium flow redox batteries (VRB). As electrolytes in vanadium batteries, solutions of vanadium salts in mixtures of solutions of sulfuric and hydrochloric acids with an aerosil (silicon dioxide) with particle size of up to 40 nm are proposed. Electrolyte is made in three steps: chemical stage – dissolution of vanadium pentoxide in mixture of acids; electrochemical stage is the use of an electrochemical device consisting of two or more graphite electrodes separated by a perfluorinated proton-conducting membrane to obtain a vanadium electrolyte with a valence of (+3.5); stage of electrolyte adjustment by adding aerosil with particle size of not more than 40 nm.
EFFECT: improved conductivity of vanadium electrolyte by 20 % compared to other electrolytes and expansion of temperature limit of VRB serviceability up to -40 °C.
