FIELD: metallurgy.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to metallurgy and foundry production, in particular, to preparation of materials for cast iron cupola melting. Briquette contains iron containing material, including cast iron, steel chips and iron oxides, carbon-containing substance and lime dust. Spent wax-like model composition (SWMC) is used as a carbon-containing substance at the following ratio of components, wt%: SWMC – 10–20, lime dust – 5–10, iron-bearing material – the rest. Iron oxide source used is oily steel scale in an amount of up to 12 % of the weight of the iron-containing material.

EFFECT: invention ensures compactness, maximum hydrophobicity, minimum crumbling of the briquette in the presence of finely dispersed and dust-like components in it, intensification of cupola melting and minimization of sulfur content in molten iron during its use.
