FIELD: transportation.
SUBSTANCE: method and device (18) for monitoring tires (2) for vehicle wheels, in which there are provided: supply of tire (2) subject to control, to control station (27) with side (11) of tire (2), laid on support part (36) of rotary table (35), wherein support part (36) lies in plane and rotary table (35) has rotation axis (Z) perpendicular to said plane; and performing a centring operation adapted to align, in said plane, axis (R) of tire (2) rotation with axis (Z) of rotation of rotary table (35). Centring operation comprises identification, in said plane, of axis (R) of tire (2) rotation by means of: a) obtaining image of tire (2) laid on said support part (36) of rotary table (35); b) determining, in the obtained image, number n of analysis directions, α1, α2, ..., αi, ..., αn, intersecting in one selected central point (Pc), where n and i are integers, n > 1 and 1 ≤ i ≤ n; c) for each analysis direction αi : determining, in the obtained image, the number of possible m axes of symmetry, si1, si2, ..., sij, ..., sim, perpendicular to the analysis direction, αi, where m and j are integers, where m > 1 and 1 ≤ j ≤ m; calculating image symmetry relative to each of said possible symmetry axes, si1, si2, ..., sij, ..., sim, wherein said level of symmetry is indicative of the probability that the centre of bus (2) is on a corresponding possible axis of symmetry, si1, si2, ..., sij, ..., sim ; determining probability distribution Pαi indicating deviation of said symmetry level along said analysis direction, αi; d) determining bus centre (2) based on cumulative probability distribution, Pmerged, obtained by combining probability distributions, Pαi, calculated for said analysis directions, α1, α2, ..., αi, ..., αn; e) identification of axis (R) of tire (2) rotation on axis passing through said defined centre and perpendicular to said plane.
EFFECT: technical result is higher accuracy, reliability and safety of control operations carried out on tires during rotation on rotary table.
