FIELD: manufacturing technology.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a glass composition for producing high-modulus and high-strength glass fibers, as well as fibers suitable for use as textile and reinforcing fibers. In particular, disclosed is a glass fiber obtained from an initial composition which contains: from about 60.5 to about 70.5 wt % SiO2; from about 10 to about 24.5 wt % Al2O3; from about 6 to about 20 wt % of alkali-earth metal oxide, wherein at least 5 wt % of said alkali-earth metal oxide contain MgO; less than about 1 % TiO2 and from 0 to about 3 wt % of alkali metal oxide, wherein said glass fiber has ΔT of at least 120 °F (48.9 °C). Also disclosed are composite articles reinforced with glass fiber, such as blades of windmills.
EFFECT: fibers molded from the composition are especially suitable for use in areas where high strength and low weight are required, such as making blades of windmills, and in areas where high strength and module are required, where composites must have strength and rigidity.
