SUBSTANCE: disclosed are an electrical aerosol-generating system (100, 300) for receiving a liquid aerosol-forming substrate (230, 430), and main module (101, 301) and cartridge (200, 400) for an electrical aerosol-generating system (100, 300). Aerosol generating system (100, 300) comprises: liquid storage portion (210, 410) for holding liquid aerosol-forming substrate (230, 430); aerosol generating means (220, 420) configured to receive liquid aerosol-forming substrate (230, 430) from liquid storage portion (210, 410); one or more capillary wicks (250, 450) configured to carry liquid aerosol-forming substrate (230, 430) from liquid storage portion (210, 410) to aerosol-generating means (220, 420); temperature sensor (270, 330) configured to measure the temperature of liquid aerosol-forming substrate (230, 430) retained in liquid storage portion (210, 410); and electric circuit (120, 320). Electric circuit (120, 320) is configured to track the temperature of liquid aerosol-forming substrate (230, 430) held in fluid storage portion (210, 410), temperature being measured by temperature sensor (270, 330), and determining the loss of the liquid aerosol-forming substrate (230, 430) based on the temperature of the liquid aerosol-forming substrate (230, 430).
