SUBSTANCE: hair styling device comprises optical radiation source (L) for irradiation of hair (H), sensor unit (S) for measuring effects of hair (H) irradiation and control device with anticipatory feedback for control of optical radiation source (L) depending on signal received from sensor unit (S). Optical radiation source (L1, L2) can generate a first flash having a first energy density which can be lower than required for photothermal change of hair shape, wherein the optical radiation source is controlled to create a subsequent flash depending on the sensor signal obtained in response to the first flash, wherein the next flash can have at least a first energy density. Sensor unit (S) may include a sensor located in front of the optical radiation source in the hair movement direction. Hair styling device may comprise along direction, in which hair (H) is directed, first sensor (S1), first LED unit (L1) controlled depending on signal received from first sensor (S1), second sensor (S2) and second LED unit (L2), controlled depending on signal received from second sensor (S2). Direction, in which hair is directed through the hair styling device, can determine which part of the optical radiation source will act as the first LED unit (L1). Hair styling device may comprise a drive mechanism (D) for movement of hair (H) along the optical radiation source (L) at a rate controlled by the control device with anticipatory feedback depending on the signal received from the sensor unit (S).
