SUBSTANCE: present invention discloses an image forming system using structured lighting, in which an image sensor (for example, an active pixel sensor) is used in the active plane of the structured sample to increase the image resolution. Displayed sample can be structured and/or aligned with the image sensor such that each light sensor (for example, pixel) of the image sensor has a corresponding plurality of elements formed and/or mounted above it. As a reaction to illumination, each of the elements can emit fluorescence light, which is recorded using an image sensor pixel. During imaging, each pixel of the image sensor can be spatially multiplexed using structured lighting such that only a subset (for example, one or two) of elements aligned with the pixel is illuminated with structured light during image reading.
