SUBSTANCE: invention relates to an aerosol generating system. The system contains a device that generates an aerosol and a cartridge assembly. The aerosol generating device includes an inner device body defining a device cavity, an inlet for an air flow of the device passing through the inner device body and in fluid communication with the device cavity, an electric heater, and an outer device body. The cartridge assembly consists of an inner cartridge housing assembly defining a substrate compartment, an aerosol-forming substrate housed in the substrate compartment, and an outer cartridge housing assembly. Part of the cartridge inner housing assembly is configured to be placed in the cavity of the device. If a portion of the cartridge inner housing assembly is located in the cavity of the device, at least the first portion of the downstream edge of the outer housing of the device abuts at least the first portion of the upstream edge of the cartridge outer housing assembly, thus the outer cartridge housing assembly and the outer casing of the device form the outer casing of the system. The air inlet of the device is configured to be in fluid communication with the upstream end of the substrate compartment with the downstream end of the substrate compartment when at least a portion of the cartridge inner housing assembly is located in the cavity of the device.
