SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for using a timer to periodically update a radio access network (hereinafter – RAN)-based notification area (hereinafter – RNA) carried out by a wireless communication device made with the possibility to communicate with a communication network node. The timer is started to periodically update the RAN-based RNA area based, at least partially, on the fact that the wireless communication device is in an inactive state of radio resource control (hereinafter – RRC). The timer for periodic updating of the RNA area is made with the possibility to initiate a procedure for resuming RRC control after the timer for periodic updating of the RNA area expires. If the timer for periodic updating of the RNA area is running, the timer for periodic updating of the RNA area is stopped before the timer for periodic updating of the RNA area expires based, at least partially, on fulfilling some condition, wherein the condition is based, at least partially, on the RRC control signaling.
EFFECT: ensuring a reduction in the volume of signaling.
