FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to catalyst production methods and to a catalyst precursor composition for producing ethylene polymer. A method includes: bringing into contact hydrated carrier material containing silicon dioxide and chrome with water to form the first aqueous mixture; bringing into contact the first aqueous mixture containing a chrome-plated carrier with a solution containing (i) a solvent and (ii) an oxotitane compound to form the second aqueous mixture containing a catalyst precursor; thermal processing of the catalyst precursor to form a catalyst. The oxotitane compound is characterized with the general formula R1R2TiO, where R1 and R2, each independently, is dicarboxylate, diketonate or ammonium salt of dicarboxylate. Another method includes: a) bringing into contact (i) carrier material based on silicon dioxide containing from 0.1 to 20 wt.% of water, (ii) a solution containing (1) 2,4-pentadionate oxotitane compound, (2) a solvent, and (3) from 0.1 to 80 wt.% of water per the total weight of the solution, and (iii) a chrome-containing compound to form a catalyst precursor, in which liquid present in (i), (ii) and (iii) contains a reaction medium; and b) thermal processing of the catalyst precursor with heating to a temperature in the range from 500 to 900°C during a period of time from 3 to 12 h to form a catalyst. A catalyst precursor composition contains: (i) a carrier based on silicon dioxide containing chrome; (ii) oxotitane compound characterized with the general formula R1R2TiO.

EFFECT: olefin polymerization catalyst leads to reduction in the level of highly reactive volatile organic compounds formed during the production of the olefin polymerization catalyst; catalysts give lower shift response.
