FIELD: ceramics.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a technology for producing polycrystalline ceramics based on aluminium oxynitride with a sufficient degree of transparency in the optical range, usable in the manufacture of protective equipment, electronics, and other fields of engineering. Sintering method is executed in a single stage of heat treatment, including heating and holding at a preset temperature. The mixture of the starting powders of Al2O3, AlN in a ratio close to the area of eutectoid transformation, and a sintering additive Y2O3 in an amount of 0.5 wt.% is pressed in a uniaxial press with a force of 30 to 80 MPa. At the next stage, sintering occurs according to the reaction mechanism at a temperature of 1,670 to 1,800°C in a nitrogen gas atmosphere with a holding time of 5 to 8 hours.

EFFECT: simplified production of polycrystalline ceramics and products made thereof with a relative density over 98%, strength in the order of 170 to 220 MPa, and hardness in the range of 1,700 to 1,800 HV.
