SUBSTANCE: invention relates to image encoding and decoding. Disclosed is a method of decoding a portion (Bi) of an image divided into portions, comprising: receiving a set of coefficients encoded by a context adaptive binary arithmetic coding (CABAC) type encoder; decoding a set of coefficients representing a block of residual data of the portion, wherein the first non-zero coefficient does not contain any sign value; applying a function to a set of coefficients to generate sign data, wherein applying the function to the set of coefficients comprises: calculating the sum of coefficients, which are not equal to zero, from said set of coefficients; calculating parity of said sum of coefficients. Decoding method is characterized by that a sign is assigned to a first non-zero coefficient based on parity, wherein the even value of said sum of coefficients means that the sign of the first non-zero coefficient is positive, and the odd value of said sum of coefficients means that the sign of the first non-zero coefficient is negative.

EFFECT: high accuracy of encoding and decoding images.
