SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the technique of encoding and decoding a video signal. A device is provided that comprises at least one processor and at least one memory, including a computer program code, wherein said at least one memory and computer program code are configured so that, with the help of at least one processor, cause the device to at least: take an image; encode the image as one or more slices; and encode, in the header of a slice included in said one or more slices, a sub-image identifier indicating a sub-image containing said slice; wherein the sub-image identifier indicates the position of a sub-image containing said slice, and the sub-image identifier is one of one or more sub-image identifiers indicating one or more sub-image positions for one or more sub-images containing one or more slices.
