FIELD: foundry production.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to foundry production. A method for applying a protective coating to a metal mold for casting aluminum alloys includes applying hardening layers to its surface by cathode-ion bombardment in a vacuum chamber. Coated shaping surface of a metal mold is placed on a rotating base, next to which cathodes are installed opposite each other in one horizontal plane, the evaporation of which is carried out using an electric arc in an evaporator with simultaneous action of an ion emitter in a reaction gas medium. The shaping surface is preliminarily heated, cleaned and a 1.0 mcm thick layer with a hardness of 50-53 HRC is applied from molybdenum nitride for adhesive bonding of the coating with the surface of the metal mold. An intermediate layer of 2.0 mcm thick with a hardness of 58-60 HRC of titanium and molybdenum metal nitride is applied over the lower layer to ensure high hardness of the entire coating, then an upper layer of 2.5 mcm thick with a hardness of 52-55 HRC of molybdenum nitride is applied.

EFFECT: increased service life of a metal mold for casting aluminum alloys by increasing the durability of the coating.
