FIELD: organic chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of organic chemistry, and in particular to a method for producing benzimidazoles of the specified formula, where R = H, Me, Etn, Prn. The method consists in the interaction of o-phenylenediamine with n-alcohols C1-C4 using FeCl3⋅6H2O, or FeCl3, or FeCl2⋅4H2O, or Fe(C5H5)2, or Fe(acac)3, or Fe(OAc)2, or Fe2(CO)9 at the molar ratio [catalyst]:[o-phenylenediamine]:[alcohol]:[Cl4]=1-2:100:1875-7500:1875-3750 at a temperature of 120-130°C for 1-4 h in CCl4 medium.
EFFECT: method allows to obtain benzimidazoles of the specified formula under milder conditions and with a reduced reaction time in the presence of an accessible and inexpensive iron-containing catalyst with a high yield of 97-98%.
