FIELD: casting of metals.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the control of the shape of the ingot head during continuous casting into a mould. At the end of the casting, before the ingot head is formed, the cooling rods or other cooling structure is lowered into the ingot mould. The reduced area of the casting is determined for forming the head of the ingot. Additional molten metal is fed into the reduced area of the casting, and the cooling rods are moved transversely towards the centre of the ingot, further reducing the area of the casting. As additional molten metal fills the reduced mould area, the ingot is lowered relative to the chill rods to further increase the height of the ingot head. Additional molten metal is added until the desired ingot head shape is formed.
EFFECT: reduced internal stresses due to compression of the molten metal as it solidifies, the reduction or prevention of a shrinkage defect in the head of the ingot.
