FIELD: polymers.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the use of a quaternized polyisobutylene derivative as a stabilizer for invert emulsions in a polymerization process, wherein the quaternized polyisobutylene derivative is the reaction product of: a) a compound obtained by the reaction of a polyisobutylene-substituted acylating reagent and a compound containing a nitrogen atom capable of reacting with the said acylating reagent, and additionally containing a tertiary amino group; and b) a quaternizing reagent suitable for converting a tertiary amino group to a quaternary ammonium group; where the reaction of a polyisobutylene-substituted acylating reagent and a compound containing a nitrogen atom capable of reacting with said acylating reagent is a nucleophilic substitution reaction at the acyl group of the acylating reagent, leading to the formation of a polyisobutylene-substituted amide or imide. Also the following is described: an invert emulsion for use in a polymerization process containing the above-mentioned quaternized polyisobutylene derivative. An inverse emulsion polymerization method is described, in the said method the inverted emulsion contains the above-mentioned quaternized polyisobutylene derivative.
EFFECT: production of inverted emulsions with a sufficiently low viscosity and sufficiently high stability with respect to shear effects.
