FIELD: medical equipment.
SUBSTANCE: perforated structure for use with an airway model comprises a perforated shell containing one or more perforations and enclosing one or more branched channels. Each perforation hole represents the open end of the said one or more branched channels. The branched channels comprise one or more coatings on part or all of the inner surface of the branched channels. The coating provides a cell culture medium. The following is disclosed: a pump for displacing the volume of gas in a model airway, a system for determining the interaction between a test atmosphere and a model airway, variations of a method of simulating the interaction between a test atmosphere and a model airway, and variations of a method of determining the effect of a test atmosphere on a cell culture contained in a model airway.
EFFECT: providing a study of the respiratory tract in a system that contains a complex model of the airways.
