FIELD: foundry production.
SUBSTANCE: system (100) for detecting shrinkage of metal in a casting mould contains a mould, a camera and a light source. A mould for receiving and housing metal includes opposing first and second sides and a plurality of walls (120) extending between them. The camera faces the first side of the mould and has a field of view that includes at least a portion of the first side of the mould. The light source (150) faces the second side of the mould to emit light directed toward the second side of the mould, which light is visible to the camera through the first side of the mould when the metal is separated from at least one of the plurality of walls. Said system, based on data from the camera, detects light between the mould wall and the metal and thus determines the separation of metal from at least one wall.
EFFECT: detection of metal shrinkage in the mould is provided to prevent metal from leaking through the gap between the mould wall and the ingot shell down the outside of the ingot.
