FIELD: optics.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to optics and relates to a method of focusing electromagnetic radiation. When implementing the method, using a source of monochromatic coherent electromagnetic radiation, a plane electromagnetic wave is formed, which illuminates a spherical dielectric homogeneous mesoscale lens, made of material with relative refraction index relative to refraction index of ambient medium not more than 2 and with diameter exceeding wavelength of illumination radiation. Ball lens is made of water and symmetrically cooled to form a shell with a refraction index less than the refraction index of the lens material or the ball lens is made of a material, which, when symmetrically heated, forms a shell with a refraction index less than the refraction index of the material of the ball lens, and the ball lens is symmetrically heated.
EFFECT: providing focusing of electromagnetic radiation with a spherical homogeneous mesoscale lens with high intensity of the electromagnetic field in the focal region and wider range of materials used.
