SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to video playback on a target display. Method includes receiving a digital video bitstream containing metadata, including one or more category fields indicating the category of the video content of the digital video bitstream, and a reference mode flag indicating whether the one or more category fields condition the target display to select display settings for displaying video content in the reference mode. If the flag indicates the selection by the target display of the display settings for displaying the video content in the reference mode, then determining a display mode which corresponds to a certain category of video content, applying display settings of the determined display mode to the target display and displaying the video content.
EFFECT: providing automatic determination of a display mode which corresponds to a certain category of video content.
