FIELD: encoding and decoding.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to encoding and decoding, particularly to signalling a priority processing order for exchanging messages with metadata (e.g., exchanging messages with supplemental enhancement information (SEI)) in images and video sequences. Disclosed are methods, systems and bitstream syntax for determining message exchange with metadata processing order, for example, SEI message exchange when encoding MPEG video, where input messages with metadata are syntactically analysed in order to identify a message within messaging with a processing order of metadata (POM), which specifies a preferred order of processing selected input messages with metadata.
