FIELD: video encoding and decoding.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to interlayer prediction. Disclosed is a method of decoding an encoded video bitstream, comprising: obtaining, from the encoded video bitstream, a first syntax element indicating whether the first layer uses interlayer prediction; obtaining, from the encoded video bitstream, one or more second syntax elements relating to one or more second layers, each second syntax element indicates whether the second layer is a direct reference layer for the first layer; wherein at least one second syntax element of one or more second syntax elements has a value indicating that the second level is an immediate reference level for the first level, in case the value of the first syntax element indicates that the first layer is allowed to use inter-layer prediction; performing inter-layer prediction for a first layer picture using a second layer picture relating to at least one second syntax element as a reference picture.
EFFECT: improved degree of compression with minimal loss of image quality or without such loss.
