FIELD: electrical engineering.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to electrical engineering, namely to methods of detecting faults on a direct current overhead rail system. Disclosed is a method for determining the nature of a fault in an electrified railway power supply system, which consists in the fact that the output signal is analysed in real time in a double-ended DC overhead system, selected eighteenth harmonic of current and voltage at beginning and end of contact line of direct current and reverse traction current is subjected to analysis, as a result of which the amplitude-frequency characteristic of the signal is determined and the level of amplitudes of the harmonic components of the signal is controlled, and emergency state mode is determined by signal amplitude increase in limited time window and compared with known load threshold, by phase shift angle change location of fault on contact system is determined, differs from known designs in that the phase shift angle is used to determine the fault location at traction substations while analysing the signal transit time to determine the distance to the fault.
EFFECT: wider field of application of the method for determining the nature of a malfunction.
