FIELD: instrumentation engineering; determining geographic meridian direction using rate gyroscope.

SUBSTANCE: proposed method depends on measuring feedback current of rate gyroscope whose precession axis is set in vertical position. Feedback current is measured in following three positions of gyroscope rotor axis of revolution: close to northward direction; with rotor revolution axis turned about precession axis through 180 deg.; in with rotor revolution axis turned through 270 deg. Rotor axis of revolution is set to desired position just prior to measuring feedback current by turning gyroscope unit about precession axis. Measurement results are used to find meridian direction. Gyroscope unit is turned about precession axis in direction opposing that of vertical component of angular velocity of Earth during its 24-hour rotation.

EFFECT: enhanced precision of determining geographic meridian direction.
