FIELD: magnesium metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: method includes smelting of scrap in medium of molten flux of definite density and settling. In this case, melt before settling is additionally treated with air at excessive pressure of 0.03-0.6 MPa and supplied to under layer of melt in dispersed state with maintained flow rate of (0.1-100) cu.cm/kg.s, and density of molten flux maintained below that of solid scrap but above density of molten secondary metal with ratio of molten flux weight to processed scrap weight of 0.08-3.5. Smelting is carried out at melt temperature of 700-800 C in molten flux of the following ratio of components, wt.%: KCl, 45-58; NaCl, 8-19; MgCl2, 18-31; BaCl2, 4-12; CaCl2, 0-2.0; CaF2, 0-5.0; MgF2, 0-1.5.
