FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of generating pulsed ultraviolet (UV) radiation based on pipe-shaped pulsed lamps filled with inert gas. For this purpose the method involves filling a pipe-shaped pulsed lamp with inert gas and application of a preionisation pulse before application of the main pulse. When applying preionisation pulse, duration and current of the preionisation pulse are chosen such that plasma in the lamp has electron density of not less than 1014 cm-3. The main discharge pulse with duration of less than 10 microseconds is applied at the instant when current of the preionisation pulse is maximum. Duration of the preionisation pulse is over 10 times longer than duration of the main pulse and current of the preionisation pulse is over 10 times less than main discharge current.

EFFECT: increased efficiency and energy of UV radiation of pipe-shaped pulsed lamps, filled with inert gas, with increase of their service life at the same time.
