FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: invention aims at fault location (FL) in transmission and communication networks. A master device performs preliminary gathering of information on the segment integrity in a controlled section of the network by inquiry of slave devices (network scanning). The scanning results are entered in a microcomputer and used to determine the presence or absence of faults in the segments of the network and the distance to the related segments (fault localisation). If the faults are found, the master device performs sequential sounding of the fault segments. The accepted forms of reflectograms are entered in the microcomputer and compared to the previous values. In case of changing the forms of reflectograms, faults are localised in the scanned segments of the network.
EFFECT: eliminated ambiguity in identifying the fault segment.
