FIELD: electricity.
SUBSTANCE: overvoltage protection device includes the first and the second electrically conducting electrode elements, varistor element made from varistor material and electrically connected to each of the first and the second electrode elements, and electrically conducting fuse element. Fuse element is sensitive to heat in the device and is intended to be fused and to form current path between the first and the second electrode elements through the fuse element. Overvoltage protection method consists in use of overvoltage protection device where the current is supplied through varistor element responding to overvoltage; and at that, fuse element is fused to form new current path in the device to control the heating at least of some part of the device. Material of varistor element has been chosen from the group containing mixtures of metal oxides and silicone carbide.
EFFECT: providing safe and continuous use of the device at extreme, repeated or critical overvoltages.
