SUBSTANCE: during movement of an article in a selected direction relative the detecting element of a device which is formed by first and second capacitive detecting elements, the device successively interacts with electric fields of the first and second capacitive detecting elements. A logic "1" potential information signal which bears information on movement of the monitored article in the forward direction is generated at the first output of the device. Logic "0" voltage is present at the second output of the device. If the article moves in the reverse direction relative the detecting element, it successively interacts with electric fields of the second and first capacitive detecting elements. In that case, a logic "1" potential information signal which bears information on the movement of the monitored article in the reverse direction is generated only at the second output of the device. Logic "0" voltage is present at the first output of the device. Connecting the first and second outputs of the device transforms the device into a sensor for monitoring position of articles with one output during radial and axial movement of the articles.
