FIELD: medicine.

SUBSTANCE: total volume (SV) of the thyroid gland (TG) is measured by ultrasonic (US) findings. The patient's TG volume and body weight is calculated by SVM coefficient: SVM=SV/(M-13), wherein SVM is the relative TG volume reduced to the body weight (ml/kg), SV is the total volume of the thyroid gland (ml or cm3), M is the body weight of the person being tested, 13 is a factor corrected by the body weight. An upper limit of the SVM coefficient is 0.27 ml/kg for males and 0.23 ml/kg for females. Increasing the derived value testifies to the enlargement of the thyroid gland.

EFFECT: technique enables more accurate diagnosis of the enlargement of the thyroid gland.
