SUBSTANCE: invention relates to techniques of encoding/decoding images. Disclosed is a method of decoding an image in form of a bit stream, in which image is encoded and is represented by coefficients, and in which each coefficient is in quantised form. Method comprises a step of determining number of successive coefficients based on scanning order. Further, method includes determining whether a set of coding modes is used, according to number of successive coefficients determined based on scanning order. Method also includes deriving one encoding mode used in decoding process from a set of encoding modes using last scanned non-zero coefficient in successive coefficients when set of encoding modes is used.
EFFECT: decoding a bit stream by previously determined syntax of bit stream.
