SUBSTANCE: invention relates to video encoding/decoding. Image decoding method is disclosed for decoding, on a block-by-block basis, image data included in a coded stream. Method includes a of deriving candidates for an intra prediction mode to be used for intra prediction for a decoding target block, number of candidates constantly being a plural number. Further, method includes obtaining, from coded stream, an index for identifying one of derived candidates for intra prediction mode. Further, method includes determining, based on obtained index, one of derived candidates for intra prediction mode as intra prediction mode to be used for intra prediction.

EFFECT: reduced amount of memory required for storage of information on intra prediction mode, by storing only candidate index.
