SUBSTANCE: invention can be used to record the level of loose media in reservoirs in various industries: chemical, pharmaceutical, food, construction, etc. In the method for measuring the volume of loose or liquid materials in reservoirs by means of a digital video camera fixed above the surface of the material to be measured and hermetically separated from it by an optically transparent element, and a measuring scale applied to the side wall of the reservoir; a laser range finder is additionally mounted in the cover center, above the second optically transparent element airtightly separated from the loose material, so that the optical axis of the laser range finder coincides with the symmetry axis of the reservoir. During the measurement, the laser range finder and the digital video camera are turned on, after which the distance along the central symmetry axis of the reservoir h1 from the cover to the surface of the loose or liquid material is determined by the laser range finder, and by means of the measuring scale and the signal from the video camera, the distance h2 from the reservoir cover to the point lying on the measuring scale of the intersection area of the surface of the loose or liquid material with the reservoir surface is determined, and the volume of the loose or liquid material in the reservoir is calculated by the formula , where H is the reservoir height, D is the reservoir diameter.
