SUBSTANCE: invention relates to an apparatus and a method for building tires for vehicle wheels. In the method, the technical result is achieved by an apparatus and process for building tires for vehicle wheels, which includes making forming drum (3) having radially outer surface (3a) and containing first body (20) and second body (21) that are movable relative to each other. Further, such movement of first body (20) and second body (21) relative to each other causes a transition between a radially contracted configuration and a radially expanded configuration of radially outer surface (3a). It is followed by attaching forming drum (3) by means of grip unit (8) of handling device (7). Then, forming drum (3) is transferred by means of handling device (7) to delivery station (4) intended for delivering semi-finished products (17), and it is made to rotate around symmetry axis (x-x) for winding said semi-finished product (17) on radially outer surface (3a) and forming a sleeve element. After that, radially outer surface (3a) of forming drum (3) is narrowed to release the sleeve element from drum (3). Moreover, the attachment of forming drum (3) includes bringing the first grip devices, which interact with first shaft (41) of grip unit (8), into contact interaction with first body (20) of forming drum (3) with the possibility of detachment. Then, the second gripping devices, which interact with second shaft (42) of grip unit (8), which is coaxial and external relative to first shaft (41), are brought into contact interaction with second body (21) of forming drum (3) with the possibility of detachment.

EFFECT: increased flexibility of installations for manufacture of tires while limiting the space required to accommodate production equipment, and reducing the duration of the assembly.
