FIELD: internal combustion engines.

SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in vehicle internal combustion engines. Method for detecting deterioration of engine exhaust gas sensor characteristics is that corresponding concentrations of multiple components of exhaust gases are measured using a gas analyzer, receiving exhaust gas flow from engine, and categorizing each component into either a group of oxidants or a group of reducing agents. Determining the first air-fuel ratio of exhaust gases based on measured concentrations. Confidence is confirmed for the second air-fuel ratio of exhaust gases output from the exhaust gas sensor receiving the exhaust gas flow from the engine based on the first air-fuel ratio of the exhaust gases. Gas analyzer is located remotely from the vehicle, in which the engine and the exhaust gas sensor are installed. Version of method for detecting deterioration of engine exhaust gas sensor characteristics and engine system are disclosed.

EFFECT: technical result consists in more accurate determination of the ratio of air quantity to fuel quantity and more reliable determination of deterioration of characteristics of the exhaust gas sensor.
