SUBSTANCE: invention relates to vehicle safety systems. Method for preventing collisions comprises steps of: obtaining data from a plurality of sensors mounted on a first vehicle, determining by means of collision prevention system probability of second vehicle colliding with first vehicle rear part, based on received data and in response to determination of collision probability, detecting free space near first vehicle, determining the levels of automated driving available to the first vehicle, determining the best action to prevent or mitigate a probable collision based on the detected free space. Determination of the best action to prevent or mitigate potential collision is additionally based on the levels of automated driving available to the first vehicle.
EFFECT: improved vehicle safety.
