SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to a device and a method of assisting driving. Driving assistance device comprises a sensor, an actuator and a controller. Sensor serves to detect ambient conditions of considered vehicle. Actuator serves for driving, braking and steering of considered vehicle. Controller is configured to perform self-contained driving by actuator control based on sensor detection result. Controller extracts a high-complexity point on the planned path of the vehicle under consideration, in which the lane of the vehicle in question is connected to another lane. Controller then determines whether or not the vehicle traveling behind is located moving in the traffic lane identical to that of the vehicle in question within a predetermined range from the vehicle in question, when the considered vehicle reaches the point located at the second predetermined distance or more before the point of high complexity. At that, the second predetermined distance exceeds the first predetermined distance from the high complexity point to the point, in which the considered vehicle can determine, whether or not other vehicles are present on another lane. Then directs switching of state of motion of considered vehicle from autonomous driving to driving manually, when vehicle traveling from behind is present within predetermined range from considered vehicle.
EFFECT: creation of a system which determines the need to switch from automatic driving to manual mode.
