FIELD: mechanical engineering.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of mechanical engineering and namely to the technology of forming local carbide coatings on die steels and can be used to improve the surface characteristics of the die tool. The method of forming a coating on stamped steels includes electrospark alloying of a steel base and subsequent thermal modifying treatment by induction heating in an air atmosphere, while electrospark alloying is carried out with zirconium at an alternating current density of 0.7-2.3 A/mm2 and a specific processing time of 38-77 mm2/min after which a carbon-containing paste is applied to the surface of the zirconium layer for carburizing and the thermal modifying treatment is carried out at a current frequency on an inductor of 100-10 kHz, a temperature of 850-1250 °C for 100-300 s after which the product is cooled in air.
EFFECT: invention is directed to the formation on the surface of steel products of local coatings based on zirconium carbide characterized by thickness of up to 40 mcm and hardness of up to 873±67 HV0.98.
