SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of communications. To this end, methods are provided for the base station central unit (CU) to select a special cell (SpCell) to be used by the first distributed base station unit (DU) to serve the user terminal (UE). Such embodiments may include transmitting to the first DU the first request containing the identifier of the first cell served by the first DU as a preferred SpCell for the UE; and identifiers of one or more second cells served by the first DU. Such embodiments may also include receiving from the first DU the first response containing the first indication that the first DU cannot configure the first cell as a preferred SpCell for the UE; and the second indication that the first DU can configure either none or one or more of the third cells as an SpCell for the UE.

EFFECT: improving the functionality and/or reliability of the communication network by reducing the amount of required signaling in this communication network.
