FIELD: optical devices.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for switching an electrical-optical display characterized by the presence of a set of pixels. The set of pixels is divided into n groups, wherein n is an integer greater than 1. A full clear signal is applied to selected pixels. The display is made with the possibility to display white text on black background, and it contains a set of background pixels that remain black when displaying a series of consecutive images on the display, wherein background pixels tend to shift over time from black to an intermediate gray level. The full clear signal is applied to background pixels in at least one group of n pixel groups, restoring the black state of the specified background pixels. A complementary signal is applied to neighboring background pixels in the specified at least one group of pixels, wherein the complementary signal switches neighboring pixels to the black state. Switching voltage is not applied to background pixels that are not included in the specified one group of pixels or are not their neighboring pixels.

EFFECT: reduction in the probability of the appearance of “plumes” and edge artifacts, as well as a reduction in the luminosity of such displays when displaying white text on black background.
