SUBSTANCE: invention relates to means for encoding images. The first partitioning information for the first target block from the bitstream is received. Based on the fact that the first partition information represents that the first target block is being split, the first target block is split into the first sub-blocks. The multiple partition tree (MPT) partitioning information for the second target block is obtained from the bitstream, with the second target block being one of the first sub-blocks of the first target block. The second target block is split into second sub-blocks based on the MPT partitioning information. The second sub-blocks are non-square blocks. The MPT partitioning information includes the MPT partitioning flag for the second target block. The MPT split flag indicates whether the second target block is being split into second sub-blocks, which are non-square blocks. If the value of the MPT split flag is 1, the MPT split information includes the MPT split type information and the MPT split direction information for the second target block.
EFFECT: increase in coding efficiency.
